Usage Tips
- Which size should you choose?
- 3/5: Rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout, arctic char — freshwater and small-river versatility.
- 5/7: Bass, landlocked salmon, medium-river salmon — the most versatile size.
- 7/9: Atlantic salmon, large pike, walleye — power and backing capacity.
- 9/11: Coastal salt water, striped bass, large salmon, musky — for species that run.
- Ideal pairing: Match the 5/7 with a #5 or #6 rod and a Perception WF5F or WF6F line for a well-balanced complete system.
- Drag care: Always back the drag off completely after your day on the water to preserve the cork/FXB discs and extend the life of the mechanism.
- Salt water: Rinse thoroughly with fresh water after every outing in salt or brackish water. Dry before storing in the neoprene pouch.
- Switching retrieve hand: Remove the spool, move the outgoing line clicker to the other side, reinstall — 30 seconds, no tools.
Complete Your Setup
The reel is the heart of your system. Here is what mounts onto it:
- Backing — Loaded first, directly onto the arbor. It gives you your line reserve and fills the reel for fast retrieval. See our Dacron backings.
- Fly line — Connects to the backing. For the 3/5 and 5/7, the Perception or the Windcutter. For the 7/9 and 9/11, the Outbound Short for larger flies. See all our Axon fly lines.
- Tapered leader — Attaches to the front of the fly line and delivers the presentation. Explore our tapered nylon leaders.
- Fly rod — Your reel size should match your rod's line weight. Discover our high-performance rods.
