The Axon 9ft tapered fluorocarbon leader is engineered for fly fishing in clear water. Its refractive index is close to that of water, making it nearly invisible below the surface — even the most selective trout won't see it coming. Tapered construction ensures perfect energy transfer from fly line to fly. Available from 0X to 7X — from heavy streamers to the finest nymphs.

Why fluorocarbon?

  • Nearly invisible underwater: Fluorocarbon's refractive index (1.42) is very close to water (1.33). The leader disappears in the water column — essential in clear water and for selective trout.

  • Superior abrasion resistance: More resistant to rocks, roots, and submerged structures than nylon. Handles repeated friction without weakening.

  • Sinks naturally: Denser than water, fluorocarbon sinks slightly — ideal for nymphing, streamer fishing, and any technique where the fly needs to drop quickly in the water column.

  • Integrated welded loop: Fast and secure connection to all Axon welded loop fly lines. Loop-to-loop connection in under 10 seconds on the water.

Technical specifications

  • Length: 9 feet (2.75 m)

  • Material: Tapered fluorocarbon

  • Connection: Welded loop — compatible with all loop-to-loop fly lines

  • Available diameters: 0X · 1X · 2X · 3X · 4X · 5X · 6X · 7X

Diameter Diameter (mm) Breaking strength (lbs) Recommended use
0X0.28 mm~15 lbHeavy streamers, pike, saltwater
1X0.26 mm~12 lbSalmon, bass, large flies
2X0.23 mm~10 lbSalmon, large trout, medium streamers
3X0.20 mm~8 lbVersatile — nymph, streamer, dry fly
4X0.18 mm~6 lbStandard nymphing, dry fly
5X0.15 mm~4.5 lbFine nymphing, clear water
6X0.13 mm~3 lbSmall nymphs, crystal clear water
7X0.10 mm~2 lbExtreme conditions, ultra-selective trout

Fluorocarbon or nylon — which one to choose?

  • Choose fluorocarbon when: nymphing, streamer fishing, or fishing in particularly clear water. Its density makes it sink naturally and its near-invisibility underwater is a real advantage with selective trout.

  • Choose nylon when: dry fly fishing. Nylon floats naturally and transmits surface strikes better. Fluorocarbon tends to pull the fly underwater.

  • The simple rule: dry fly → nylon. Nymph or streamer → fluorocarbon.

Recommended species

  • Trout (all species): 3X to 6X depending on fly size. Particularly effective in Quebec's clear rivers and streams.

  • Atlantic salmon and Landlocked Salmon (Ouananiche): 1X or 2X. Late-season salmon often respond better to fluorocarbon than visible nylon.

  • Smallmouth bass and pike: 0X or 1X. Fluorocarbon's abrasion resistance is a real advantage against teeth and heavy structure.

  • Saltwater: 0X to 2X. Ideal for striped bass and bonefish — fluorocarbon handles salt and wear better than nylon.

Compatibility with Axon fly lines

  • Fly line #3 to #5: Use 4X to 6X for a delicate presentation.

  • Fly line #6 to #8: Use 2X to 4X for larger flies.
