Axon Shield Fly Reel — die-cast and CNC hybrid, 3 profiles
The die-cast + CNC hybrid — the performance of a machined reel, at a fraction of the price.
Axon Shield: Performance and engineering
The Axon Shield reel redefines the standards of fly fishing. Incredibly light, with a decidedly modern look.
The industry's best-kept secret It all comes down to hybrid engineering. The Axon Shield combines the latest advances in die-casting with meticulous fully CNC-machined finishing. This process achieves the same precision and tolerances as a 100% machined reel, at a fraction of the price. Die-casting also forms the foot and frame as a single piece — hence its remarkable light weight.
Three frame profiles The Shield comes in three frame designs, mechanically identical — only the cut-out pattern changes:
- Profile A — V-shaped spokes, clean and classic lines.
- Profile B — Organic honeycomb pattern, the most distinctive of the three.
- Profile C — Multi-spoke, a fresh take on the traditional reel look.
Key Features
-
Hybrid engineering: Advanced die-casting paired with CNC machining for maximum ruggedness without blowing your budget. You sacrifice neither strength nor light weight.
-
Ultra-smooth sealed drag: Stacked carbon and stainless steel disc system. Fully sealed, it delivers smooth, progressive tension to protect your leaders.
-
One-piece foot and frame: The die-casting advantage — no joints, no weak points, and reduced weight throughout the structure.
-
Large Arbor design: A large arbor built to speed up line retrieval during a fight and dramatically reduce unwanted line memory (coiling).
-
Absolute light weight: From 116 g to 141 g depending on size — enough to balance your rod perfectly without tiring your arm on long fishing days.

Usage Tips
-
Trout and small rivers (Size 3/4): The perfect balance for your light #3 to #5 rods and delicate presentations.
-
Trout, bass and landlocked salmon (Size 5/6): The most versatile format. Ideal for casting big poppers, controlling bass runs, and absorbing the acrobatic jumps of landlocked salmon without breaking your leader.
-
Salmon, pike and striped bass (Size 7/8): The line capacity and drag power needed to tame heavy predators. Thanks to its sealed drag, it handles the marine environment without trouble — a freshwater rinse after use is all it takes.
Expert tips:
-
Always remember to back off your drag after each outing to avoid needlessly compressing the carbon discs and to preserve their smoothness.
-
Left/right-hand conversion: Remove the spool, reverse the one-way clutch inside the frame, then reassemble. The operation takes under a minute and requires no tools.
Complete Your Setup
The reel is the heart of your system. Here is what mounts onto it:
- Backing — Loaded first, directly onto the arbor. It gives you your line reserve and fills the reel for fast retrieval. See our Dacron backings.
- Fly line — Connects to the backing. For the 3/4 and 5/6, the Perception or the Windcutter. For the 7/8, the Outbound Short for larger flies. See all our Axon fly lines.
- Tapered leader — Attaches to the front of the fly line and delivers the presentation. Explore our tapered nylon leaders.
- Fly rod — Your reel size should match your rod's line weight. Discover our high-performance rods.
