The tippet that resists salt, teeth, and pressure.

The Axon Nylon Tippet is designed for situations where standard tippet reaches its limits. Increased abrasion resistance against reefs, rocks, and the teeth of predatory species. 30 meters per spool, available in 12lb, 18lb, and 22lb — the three strengths that cover coastal fishing from bonefish to juvenile tarpon, from striped bass to river bass. Compatible with all welded loop fly lines.

Highlight

Designed for extreme conditions — salt, reefs, violent fights.

  • Enhanced abrasion resistance: Holds up better than standard freshwater tippet against coral reefs, rocks, structures, and the teeth of predatory species.
  • Corrosion resistance: Nylon tolerates prolonged exposure to saltwater well without becoming brittle — unlike untreated freshwater tippets.
  • 3 strengths covering all targets: 12lb for medium species in clear water, 18lb for more aggressive targets, 22lb for powerful fights and fish with teeth.
  • 30 meters per spool: Suitable for sea outings where tippet is changed more frequently than in fresh water.
  • Saltwater and freshwater versatile: Also works very well for pike, landlocked salmon, and any species requiring a robust tippet in fresh water.

Specifications

  • Material: Reinforced monofilament nylon

  • Length: 30 meters per spool

  • Main Use: Coastal saltwater fishing and freshwater predatory species

Strength Class Ideal use Target species
12 lb 4# (0.28 mm) Clear water, wary fish, small flies Bonefish, sea trout, medium striped bass
18 lb 6# (0.37 mm) Standard saltwater conditions, medium flies Juvenile tarpon, striped bass, river bass
22 lb 7.5# (0.42 mm) Aggressive species, reefs, voluminous flies Pike, large coastal species, permit

Usage Tips

Which strength to choose:

  • 12lb: For wary species in clear water — bonefish in shallow water, sea trout in estuaries, striped bass on grass beds. Fine tippet for discreet presentation.

  • 18lb: The versatile strength for most saltwater outings. Balance between stealth and strength for dynamic fights. Recommended for juvenile tarpon and striped bass.

  • 22lb: For species that fight violently or have teeth — pike, permit, large coastal species. Also recommended when fishing near abrasive structures.

Setup with Axon fly lines:

  • Axon Velocity SW WF8F Fly Line: Use 18lb or 22lb tippet directly on the leader for coastal predators.

  • Axon Outbound Short WF8F Fly Line: 12lb tippet at the tip for delicate presentation on the flats.

  • With the Axon AllTime #8 Rod: This tippet is the ideal complement for travel trips to the south — Cuba, Florida, Mexico.

Maintenance after saltwater use:

  • Rinse the spool with fresh water after each sea outing. Salt crystallized on the nylon accelerates its degradation. Dry in the shade before storing — heat and UV rays weaken nylon.
